Common Problems Rats Cause

Mice and rats, no matter what size or specie they are, are a pain in the neck to many. The problems caused by these gruesome creatures are just so many that just the name is enough to ring the tocsin for the gardeners and the property owners. From their sight to their sound to the mess they create, the whole experience with mice or rats can be extremely unpleasant. They can bite through wires, contaminate food and carry different parasites.

Mice and rats can enter homes through openings. Rats can slide through openings the size of a penny, while mice can fit through holes the size of a nickel. Therefore, it's important to deliberately check the exterior of your home and close any openings of these sizes.

How dangerous can rats be?

Rats and mice can be dangerous in many ways:

Bites and scratches:

If you do get bitten by a rodent, the primary concern is getting an infection. One such infection is known as  Rat Bite Fever (RBF), which can be transmitted either through a contaminated rodent's bite or scratch or by just handling a rodent with the disease

Secretions

The amassing of feces from mice and rats can spread microscopic organisms, contaminate food sources and trigger hypersensitive allergic reactions in people. When the fecal droppings get dry, it can be dangerous to individuals who inhale it in. Also, rat droppings can spread diseases and viruses

Saliva

Just like the urine and feces, their saliva is similarly dangerous and as it is airborne, whenever breathed in it can contaminate living creatures in multiple ways

rats and mice are known to spread more than 35 diseases. These diseases can be transmitted to people directly, through the handling of live or dead rodents, through contact with rat feces, urine, or saliva, and through rat nibbles.

Diseases that rats convey

Hantavirus

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a respiratory disease transmitted by contaminated rodents through urine, droppings or saliva. People can get the disease when they take in aerosolized infection.

Leptospirosis

Weil's disease or leptospirosis is a type of bacterial infection that is carried by rodents like rats, mice, skunks, and squirrels. it is through contact with rodent urine and feces.

Salmonellosis

Salmonellosis is a condition that is caused by infection with the Salmonella bacterium. Salmonellosis is uncommon in pet rats and infection is generally found to have been spread through the ingestion of food and water contaminated with feces, urine, and bedding material.

Rat Bite Fever (RBF)

Rat Bitefever is a disease that is caused by infection with one of two unique kinds of microscopic organisms: o Streptobacillus Moniliformis (in North America) o Spirillum short (in Asia). These microorganisms are found in the mouth, nose and respiratory tract of rodents (particularly rats).

Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis

This disease is caused by lymphocytic choriomeningitis infection (LCMV). Transmission can happen as a result of contact with fresh urine, saliva, droppings consumed by infected rats.
